Moving around Xi'an is getting easier and its now becoming a piece of cake to get to where you need to be (If you exclude rush hour that is!). I find it necessary that I give an overview of the transportation here in Xi'an just so that people are not left too puzzled when wondering how they should move around this vast city.
The bus network in Xi'an covers literally every corner of the city and there is nowhere that can't be reached should you be willing to search your route before hand. Of course the buses can get extremely crowded and some of them do not operate the transportation swipe card system, therefore a grasp of mandarin is sometimes necessary. Luckily there are separate bus lanes in most parts of the city so you should avoid most of the rush hour traffic. Beware of pickpockets!
The metro in Xian is making life more convenient when it comes to moving around the city and its expanding all the time. The metro is incredibly Cheap and a journey from one end of the city to another will likely set you back about 5 yuan, which works out less than a dollar (April 2016)! If you have one of the transportation cards which you can top up at any of the metro stations throughout the city, then it gets even cheaper. The Metro can at times get rather crowded but the plus side is that it is pretty much a smooth ride no matter where you go who is more than what can be said about traveling by bus!
